The Epic
Your sword is raised in front of your eyes like a cloud concealing sun,
As you move it away slowly I resist the urge to run,
You reveal all that you've hidden and my tears burn to blaze,
Because through those eyes you're telling me the story of your days,
In the beginning you were weak and small,
But as you grew somehow you found the strength to crawl,
You still remember the warmth of your mother,
And the countless tauntings of your brother,
Your eternity of childhood quickly faded into memory,
Innocence left you and you began to see,
Those that you loved shoved off a pedestal,
And all those precious heroes no longer seemed as tall,
Friendships turned to competition,
Stories turned to repetition,
Faith began to melt away from the center of your eye,
As you seeked truth inside a life that's meant to be a lie,
Then a pair of eyes you never noticed before,
Made their way right through your unsuspecting door,
Her face still haunts you to this day,
Because you grew cold and walked away,
She saw things inside of you that you had never seen,
She saw the truth about a life that wasn't cut and clean,
She taught you the lesson that you told everyone you ever met,
Don't shove away the faces that you know you'll never forget,
After her ghost faded into background,
You walked outside and glanced around,
And saw the fight that would distinguish you from the rest of the crowd,
Your tears morphed into the shape of a cross,
And suddenly your broken dreams didn't feel like such a loss,
You rode into that darkest place,
With the cross alongside you, salvaging the good left among the human race,
Looking into the enemy's eye and killing him with grace,
Light slowly pushed inside and filled the empty space,
After the dawn of your most brutal battle you fell back asleep,
In your dreams you wondered if anyone prayed your soul to keep,
A message from your home sprung you awake on your feet,
A tragedy that tore your heart into pieces less complete,
As she told you of the happening, your mother's voice was soft and sweet,
That haunting girl you had once known who never admitted defeat,
Had been run down as she sang her truth song loud on sinner's street,
Cluthching to your chest you fell from your seat,
The cross had helped you slay the dragon and to tame the bear,
But this wound seeemed to cut too deep to be cured by any prayer,
Because to lose someone you love for nothing less than who they are,
Is to gaze upon a sky without a single star,
But before you could turn the fatal scratch into another scar,
A resounding cry came out from a bleeding stranger,
A lost and naked child walking through the bloody danger,
Through the power of the cross,
You once again forgot your loss,
You wrapped the child up in warmth,
And saved her from the cold,
The world called you stupid and the martyrs called you bold,
And suddenly your purpose again began to unfold,
This pursuit of all that is true,
Just where did it land you?
A thousand times in foreign nations,
A few times to beautiful celebrations,
In the desert sifting sand,
Carrying others on your back into the promised land,
Your face spit at by countless evil Queens,
Explaining to the maestro what the broken melody means,
In a cell for countless years,
Still not regretting having faced your fears,
Now a man dying in a bed,
With me standing above him, pondering the life he lead,
This man who had been ordinary,
Finding truth and becoming extraordinary,
You smile and breathe in,
About to break away from this world of broken sin,
Your last words will live forever and a day,
This had nothing to do with me,
You say,
Then your soul just rose away,
I wonder if you talked with the savior and finally understood,
I wonder if she met you there , and you finally kissed the lips you never could,
The shell you once inhabited is now lying still,
And I'm mystified until,
I realize that it all began with a cross upon a hill.
Your sword is raised in front of your eyes like a cloud concealing sun,
As you move it away slowly I resist the urge to run,
You reveal all that you've hidden and my tears burn to blaze,
Because through those eyes you're telling me the story of your days,
