Captain Von Trapp’s Lullaby
Nothing can be told from the cover of a book,
She thinks his solemn eyes never look,
She has never believed that magic could lie behind a stern upper lip,
But then he takes the guitar to his hip,
Their eyes melt together into places unknown,
In the midst of a crowded life they are together alone,
He stands firm and tall on the street,
She dances in the rain, giving rhythym to her feet,
He is quiet and she is loud,
She is ashamed and he is proud,
She respects him first and loves him after,
Each finds the other ridiculous at moments, which gives birth to laughter,
He has quiet adoration,
She screams her affections to the nation,
He rarely falls, and she always stumbles,
When she is full, his stomach rumbles,
He is the foundation still standing even after she crumbles,
He doesn’t need hands to touch her,
She doesn’t need legs to dance around him,
For she is the walls that will surround him,
He strums the strings and hums a wordless tune,
When he finds the words to sing, she discovers how to swoon,
Here today,
When I watch you look away,
I am Maria wandering the hills and telling her master goodbye,
Hoping that someday you will sing to me,
Captain Von Trapp’s lullabye.
